Dream as if you'll live forever.
Live as if you'll die today.
James Dean, forever frozen as the talented, misunderstood,
rebellious youth, remains the symbol of teenage angst.
He was only 24-years-old when he died in the car accident.

I really like black/white/sepia postcards and also
I like street views from old towns.
Wish I only knew, what city and which country.
But perhaps that's not very important
- just enjoy the view :)

I've been sick for the past 5 days with a nasty flu and this whole week I've been pretty inefficient and tired. So I decided to cheer me up and browse our old holiday cards from Sao Miguel, the green island of Azores.  These cards I sent to my mother.

I feel so much better now!

Moskovan puolustajien monumentti on suuren isänmaallisen sodan Moskovan taistelussa kuolleiden muistoksi rakennettu muistomerkkikompleksi. Muistomerkki valmistui vuonna 1974.

Recieved on: 25 Jan, 2013
Distance: 520 km (323 miles)

Thank you Gennadiy from Saint Petersburg.

This card is a picture from Russian folktale: The  Fox and The Thrush
Illustration by R.I. and E.A. Ogorodnikov

The story tells about a greedy fox and a wise thrush.

The fox saw the dogs and ran away from them. But the dogs were following her.
The scared fox took off running as far as her legs could carry her.

And the point of this story is of course: Stupidity is always punished!

Name Day

This card I got from Aunt-Irja on my name day year 1955.

Finns celebrate their name days (Finnish nimipäivä, Swedish namnsdag) according to their given name  on the date given by the calendar published by the University of Helsinki Almanac Office (Almanakkatoimisto). Every day except new Year's Day, Christmas Day and Febryary 29 is a name day. For each day there are names in both Finnish and Swedish.

A card to my brother Jaakko ( Jacob, James ) from our cousin Heikki ( Henry ).

Many traditional beliefs attach to various name days, especially involving the weather and the appropriate times to perform seasonal agricultural tasks such as planting some particular crop. For example there is a saying that "Jaakko (James) casts a cold rock into the water", meaning that on Jaakko's day, the 25th of July, the waters start getting colder, which is not far from true on average.
The seven days from July 18 to 24th, being all women's name days, are known as the women's week. It is popularly believed to be an especially rainy week, and this is to some extent supported by statistics, as late July and early August are the rainiest time of the year in Finland.

On November 25 it is Kaisa's ( Kathy, Kate ) day and it should be mild weather because it forecasts mild winter and good harvest for the next year. It also forecasts beautiful weather until Christmas. On the other hand if it's cold on Kaisa's day it will be raining on Christmas.

Numerokuvat # 023

23.1.1990 saimme naapurilta terveiset Madeiralta.

Kortissa Camara de Lobos-Madeira
ja Cabo Girao, maailman (toiseksi?) korkein rantajyrkänne.

23. 6. 1999 lähetimme tyttären kanssa kotimiehille  kortin Pargasta.

Hotellinomistajan nimi oli taas Yannis,
ja satamassa vaihteeksi hiljaista,
koska satamapoliisi piti tiukasti vahtia.
Edellispäivänä merikapteenit eivät oikein
tahtoneet päästä sopuun liikennesäännöistä.
