Osmo Antero ”Omppu” Omenamäki on suomalainen graafikko, joka on tunnetaan suunnittelemistaan postikorteista ja postimerkeistä. Omenamäki toimi mainospiirtäjänä eri toimistoissa 1960-luvun alusta noin 14 vuoden ajan, ja vuodesta 1974 lähtien hänellä on ollut oma toimisto Ateljee Omppu. Wikipedia

Red Houses at Christmas

Many wooden houses are painted deep red in Finland. The deep red tradition didn’t actually start in Finland, but rather, in Sweden. The ores from copper mines in Falun produced iron oxide, a byproduct of burning the ore to obtain the copper. Originally the red dirt was considered trash and piled up beside the mine. A few hundred years later, someone noticed that the pile had not rotted or decayed and began manufacturing it as paint. Since it was cheap and easy to produce, many wealthy people did not use it, preferring to use expensive pigments in colors of yellow or white. Finland calls this red paint punamulta, or “red earth”.

Palm Sunday

The Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday, palmusunnuntai, which also means the beginning of the traditions – like the little Easter witches arriving at your doorstep.

On Palm Sunday and Holy Saturday, children dress up as little witches. Wearing colourful clothes, overhead scarves and painted freckles on their cheeks, the little witches go from door to door with their willow twigs saying: “Virvon, varvon, tuoreeks terveeks, tulevaks vuodeks; vitsa sulle, palkka mulle.”

Graphic Christmas

Osmo “Omppu” Omenamäki (1940 -) is a Finnish graphic artist known for his postcards and stamps. Omenamäki has worked as an advertising designer in various offices for about 14 years. Since 1974, he has had his own office, Ateljee Omppu. In 1991, the stamp designed by Omenamäki was chosen as the most beautiful stamp in Finland. Omenamäki has drawn a total of about 1,500 postcards. The collectors of his production have the Omppu Club, founded in 1995.
