Lanyang Museum, Yilan, Taiwan

The museum was designed by Kris Yao to blend in with nature and inspired by local natural elements such as the cuesta, a rock-form commonly found along the northeast coast of Taiwan. At a distance, the building resembles a giant black rock, however up close the building is truly a unique design.

The Riegelhaus [half-timbered house] has a supporting framework made of timber. In addition to its supporting function, the timber-frame structure also has an ancillary decorative purpose. The gaps were, for the most part, infilled with a clay-wood composite or bricks. Half-timbering was one of the predominant methods of construction from the High Middle Ages up to the 19th century.
