Newar are the historical inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley and its surrounding areas in Nepal and the creators of its historic heritage and civilisation. Newars form a linguistic and cultural community of primarily Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman ethnicities following Hinduism and Buddhism with Newari as their common language. Newars have developed a division of labour and a sophisticated urban civilisation not seen elsewhere in the Himalayan foothills. Newars have continued their age-old traditions and practices and pride themselves as the true custodians of the religion, culture and civilisation of Nepal.

Akha Hill Tribe, Northern Thailand

travel time 8 days
distance travelled 8,086 km
sent by Kitty, Thailand

The Akha are an indigenous hill tribe who live in small villages at higher elevations in the mountains of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Yunnan Province in China. They made their way from China into Southeast Asia during the early 20th century. Civil war in Burma and Laos resulted in an increased flow of Akha immigrants and there are now some 80,000 living in Thailand's northern provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, where they constitute one of the largest of the hill tribes. Many of their villages can be visited by tourists on trekking tours from either of these cities.

Merry Christmas from Thailand

Samlor by Nancy Chandler

The three-weeled Thai "samlor" , also knowen as the "tuk tuk" for the noice of its motor, is a unique form of open air transport valued for its ability to weave in and out of traffic carrying bulky items that don't fit in taxis, as well as its innate tourist appeal.

American artist Nancy Chandler is best known for her shopping and sightseeing maps of Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Over the past 30 years she has also built up an extensive greeting card collection reflective of life in Thailand.

Buddha statue in Wat Si Chum temple, Sukhothai Historical Park
Received from Liliya in St. Petersburg, Russia
Distance: 515 km
Travel time: 22 days

The Sukhothai Historical Park covers the ruins of Sukhothai, literally "Dawn of Happiness", capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, in what is now Northern Thailand. It is located near the modern city of Sukhothai, capital of the province with the same name.

Wat Si Chum has a massive mandapa in the middle of the complex which was built in the late 14th century by King Maha Thammaracha II. Inside the mandapa, there is a huge 11 meters wide and 15 meters high seated Buddha image called "Phra Achana"

Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Grand Palace, Bangkok

Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (officially known as Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram) is regarded as the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. Located in the historic centre of Bangkok, within the grounds of the Grand Palace, it enshrines Phra Kaew Morakot (the Emerald Buddha), the highly revered Buddha image meticulously carved from a single block of jade.

This card comes from  Suchada in Bangkok
Distance: 8,043 km
Travel time: 14 days

The Grand Palace on suuri muurien ympäröimä temppelialue.

Wat Phra Kaew on luultavasti tärkein buddhalainen temppeli Thaimaassa . Temppelin valmistustyö aloitettiin vuonna 1785, kun kuningas Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (Rama I) muutti kaupunkiin.
