Menorca lighthouses

Menorca or Minorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea belonging to Spain. Its name derives from its size, contrasting it with nearby Majorca.

One of the representative characteristics of Menorca island are the magnificent lighthouses on the top of amazing cliffs. There are many well known lighthouses spread along the coast of the island.

One of them is Favàritx lighthouse

The lighthouse was built in 1922 and is an imposing and impressive structure standing at 47 metres with a light range of 16 nautical miles. The surrounding area of the lighthouse is stunning, with a mix of rugged volcanic rock and slate and not much else.

Hailuoto, Marjaniemi

Hailuoto, Marjaniemi
Fisherman's village and lighthouse

21.7.1989

Hailuoto and Marjaniemi are an important part of the maritime history of the Gulf of Bothnia and the city of Oulu. Even today, the pilot boats are located in Marjaniemi, piloting ships safely to the Oulu harbour. The city of Oulu was established on 1610, but in Hailuoto there was permanent settlement already in the 12th century.

Marjaniemi Lighthouse  is located approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi) west of Oulu. The lighthouse was designed by Axel Hampus Dalström as his fourth lighthouse and it was first lit in 1871.
The tower is brick masonry, and has 110 steps inside with no intermediate floors. Originally the light was equipped with a Fresnel lens system, and it displayed a white light towards a sector clockwise from south to northeast. There were two lighthouse keepers and a master until 1962 when the lighthouse was automated. A pilot station was built next to the tower, currently the pilot station serves as a hotel.

Harbor of Rhodos

Mandraki is one of the three harbors in Rhodes. It is famous, because it is believed that the great statue of Colossus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once stood at the harbor entrance.  Nowadays the sculptures of Rhodian Deer, a stag and a doe, stand on slim columns on either side of the harbor where the Colossus possibly once stood.

The Fort of Saint Nicholas guards the Mandraki harbour.

The lighthouse dates back to 1863, during the Ottoman period, it was reactivated in 2007.

North Carolina lighthouses
For centuries, lighthouses have been erected to protect ships and guide them safely away from low shores. Each lighthouse has individual markings making it readily identifiable from a distance. Advancements in technology have made the lighthouses obsolete, but most are open to the tourists and visitors providing a historic view of times gone by.

Thank you John in North Carolina.
