Dressed Cats by Eugen Hartung

Eugen Hartung (1897–1973) was a Swiss painter. He is well known for his paintings of anthropomorphic cats. These postcards normally illustrate settings that are filled with action, often with a minor disaster just about to occur. While the dressed cats were by far the most popular and most plentiful cards, Hartung also painted other dressed animals - primarily mice, dogs, and hedgehogs.

These cards were sent to me by sister in 1989

Old Town, Tallinn

Because summer is time for traveling I decided to introduce some popular tourist destinations for Finns. Estonia is one of the most popular destinations and especially Tallinn and not only because it is just 70 km (43 miles) south from  Helsinki - Tallinn is beautiful.

At the historical and medieval heart of the city is the hill of Toompea, covered in cobbled streets and filled with medieval houses and alleyways.  The city's old town has been astonishingly well preserved and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.

P is for Poland

In 1986 I made a trip to Poland with our daughter. These are some cards from our trip.

Gdansk
St Nicholas' Church is the oldest church in Gdansk built in late 12th century. Between 1348 and 1390 a cloister was added. This is the only church in Gdansk which wasn't damaged during the last World War.

The Royal Chapel - Kaplica Królewska
is the only Baroque church in old Gdańsk built between 1678 and 1681.
King Jan III Sobieski wasthe founder of the chapel.

"Hi! We are now in Gdansk. The boat trip went fine.
Ps. Greetings to Kuutti, Jymy and Julle"
( Kuutti was our samoyed and Jymy and Julle our guinea pigs :)

Warsaw

The Paroque Garden,  Sundial on the wall of the Palace
Wilanów Palace is a royal palace located in the Wilanów district, Warsaw. Wilanów Palace survived the time of Poland's partitions and both World Wars and has preserved its authentic historical qualities,  also is one of the most important monuments of  Polish culture.

Zakopane
The Tatra Mountains, Tatras or Tatra, are a mountain range which forms a natural border between Slovakia and Poland, and are the highest mountain range in the Carpathian Mountains.

N is for Norway

10.7. 89.
"Greetings from the northernmost post office of Europe. The sceneries are really amazing! "
Soile

Nordkapp is a 307 m (1007 ft) high cliff rising above the Arctic Ocean. Nordkapp is promoted as the northenmost point of Europe, this is however not true. The neighbouring point Knivskjellodden is actually 1,457 m (4780 ft) further north
Nordkapp - The North Cape, the North Cape Horn has always been a well-known an important point of orientation for all boats and ships. The rock has had a great variety of names and it was only in the mid 16th century that it was given the present name.

View from Salen,  Habor, Hurtigruta dock
Hammerfest – the world’s northernmost town – is one of the most important travel destinations in Northern Norway.

Kiirastorstai - Maundy Thursday - Wielki Czwartek

Wesołych zdrowych i pogodnych Swiat Wielkanocnych
życzy  Barbara
Cieszyn, Poland

Our daughter got this card from her friend Barbara in 1989.
It is hand written and it was a little difficult for us to read and understand Polish at that time - no Google translator - it was quite difficult still now, even with the help of Google. But from the picture we understood it to be an Easter card with Happy Easter wishes.

In Poland they celebrate Easter with the Blessing Basket. They prepare the basket the Saturday before Easter. Inside the basket they place beautifully colored eggs, bread, cake, salt, paper and white colored sausages and with the basket they then go to church to have the basket of food blessed. It is believed that Great Lent which is the forty day fast before Easter is not over until the basket has been blessed hence the reason why it is called Blessing Basket.

All that is contained in the basket is of meaning such as the colored eggs mean the risen Christ, the bread and salt are for good health and a prosperous life, the sausages are supposed to be a wish for enough food and fertility for the coming spring. There is also cheese and marzipan which are another part of the Easter basket.
Życzę Wam miłych, zdrowych i pogodnych Świąt Wielkanocnych!
Toivotan teille hauskaa ja rauhallista pääsiäistä!

Fountain Friendship of Nations

Kansojen ystävyys-suihkulähde

5.9.1988 from my sister.

The People’s Friendship Fountain (also known as Friendship of Nations) on Moscow features 16 gilded statues of maidens in their national costumes, representing all the Soviet Union Republics. The fountain is framed by an octahedral bowl of red granite with a surface area of 4,000 square meters. The fountain is serviced by a complex system of eight powerful pumps that can shoot 1,200 liters of
water from 800 jets to the height of 24 meters per second.
