Kalevala's Day- Finnish Culture Day

Kalevala Day is celebrated in Finland on the 28th of February, in honour of the day on which the Old Kalevala’s foreword was dated by Elias Lönnrot (February 28, 1835). Kalevala Day is an official flag-raising day in Finland, and simultaneously the Day of Finnish culture.

Akseli Gallen-Kallela's Kalevala art
Aino-Mynth, 1891, triptych
Left -hand panel: Väinämöinen courting Aino

Väinämöinen is the central character of The Kalevala, a shamanistic hero with a magical power of song and music.Väinämöinen created and plays the kantele, a Finnish stringed instrument that resembles and is played like a zither. One of his potential brides, Joukahainen's sister Aino, drowns herself instead of marrying him.

The Forging of the Sampo, 1893

Sampo or Sammas was a magical artifact of indeterminate type constructed by Ilmarinen that brought riches and good fortune to its holder.

Joukahainen's Revenge 1897

Joukahainen is the rival of the main character, Väinämöinen. After losing a singing contest, he pledges his sister Aino to Väinämöinen, but she drowns herself rather than marry him. Joukahainen, still envious of Väinämöinen, then shoots the stag of his rival from under him.

Lemminkäinen's Mother, 1897

Lemminkäinen, a handsome, arrogant and reckless ladies-man.
He shares a very close relationship with his mother, who revives him after he has been drowned in the river of Tuonela while pursuing the object of his romantic desires.

The Kalevala is regarded as the national epic of Karelia and Finland and is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. The Kalevala was instrumental in the development of the Finnish national identity, the intensification of Finland's language strife and the growing sense of nationality.

Endangered

Karhu / Brown bear / Ursus arctos

Finland is home to more than 1,700 bears ( Luke 2016), though they are only seldom seen, since they are shy of people. Several wildlife tour operators run excursions out into the forests of Eastern Finland where you can stay overnight in a hide and watch and photograph wild bears who come to feed on fishy or meaty scraps put out to attract them.

Ilves / Lynx /  Lynx lynx

These beautiful big cats have become more common  (over 2,600 Luke 2016 ) in Finland’s forests in recent years, though they are hard to spot, as their excellent senses of sight, smell and hearing enable them to keep well away from humans.

Liito-orava / Siberian flying squirrel / Pteromys volans

The Siberian flying squirrel (Pteromys volans) is an Old World flying squirrel with a range from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Pacific coast in the east. It is the only species of flying squirrel found in Europe. It is considered vulnerable within the European Union where it is found only in Finland, Estonia and Latvia.

Merikotka / White tailed eagle  / Haliaeetus albicilla

Thanks to the efforts of Finnish nature conservationists, majestic white-tailed eagles have returned from the brink of extinction, and today they are a common sight soaring over the waters and islands of Finland’s beautiful Baltic archipelagoes.

Mustakurkku-uikku /  Horned grebe / Podiceps auritus

The horned grebe is an attractive, little grebe. It is a migratory bird and returning to Finland in mid-April. It is a protected species under the European Union bird directive and a vulnerable species according to Finland's threat classification system.

 Copenhagen Amager Square, shopping street

Amager Square, today part of the Strøget pedestrian zone, is often described as the most central square in central Copenhagen. It is also one of the oldest, taking its name from the Amager farmers who in the Middle Ages came into town to sell their produce at the site.

Cats in art

Max Raffler  (1902 - 1988 ) Cats

Max Raffler was a German visual artist. His work has been shown widely and published in a number of books in Germany, and he remains one of that country’s most well known naive painters.  His subjects were often images of the rural countryside, and religious pictures that were encouraged by a local priest and shown in the church. Other images include self-portraits and paintings of cats, as well as illustrations of children’s stories.

 Julius Adam (1852-1914)  Kitten Carriage,

Cat painting was very popular during the 19th century. I think Julius liked cats and was quite talented capturing them in action.

Martin Leman  ( 1934) " Her Mistress Voice "

Martin Leman has been best known for his exquisite paintings of cats. He is one of the most popular contemporary British artists. Leman has been described as 'the most sophisticated of 'naïve' British artists, but unlike many so-called naïve or primitive painters, he had a thorough artistic training.

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen  "Le Chat Noir" ("The Black Cat")

"Le Chat Noir" ("The Black Cat") was a Parisian, bohemian night club in the late 1800s. Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen painted this poster as an advertisement for Le Chat Noir.

Menorca

Minorca or Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea belonging to Spain. Its name derives from its size, contrasting it with nearby Majorca.

Ciutadella de Minorca or simply Ciutadella is a town and a municipality in the western end of Minorca..It is one of the two primary cities in the island, along with Maó. Ciutadella is a very attractive city, with a charming port, and old quarter, which is a delight to explore.

The port is both a fishing and leisure.
From me to me:)

Menorca Biosphere Reserve, UNESCO,  Spain

The main characteristic of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve is the diversity characteristic of nearly all Mediterranean island ecosystems. The most notable habitats are the gullies, caves, wetlands made up of ponds, lagoons and marshes, dune systems, coasts and islets. Some 220 species of birds, and 1000 species of plants (60 of which are endemic) have been recorded.

Fedoskino art

Russian lacquered boxes, miniature painted works of art that developed from icon painting in the 18th century, abound in depictions of folklore, fairy tales, costumes and traditions. There are four distinct styles, represented by four schools of Russian lacquer art, which are named for the villages of their creation, Fedoskino, Palekh, Mystera, and Kholui.

The village of Fedoskino  located not far from Moscow on the banks of the Ucha River, is the oldest of the four art centers of Russian lacquer miniature painting on papier-mâché, which has been practiced there since 1795.

The theme of troyka (the three horses) riding was very popular in 19th Century's Boxes. A troyka rushing through the snow field and sledge riding is a popular theme that has become an emblem of the Fedoskino craft.

The style of Fedoskino painting is largely realistic in composition and detail.
