 Helene Schjerfbeck ( 1862-1946) 

Helena Sofia (Helene) Schjerfbeck was a Finnish painter. A modernist painter, she is known for her realist works and self-portraits, and also for her landscapes and still lifes. Throughout her long life, her work changed dramatically beginning with French-influenced realism and plein air painting. It gradually evolved towards portraits and still life paintings.  

Schjerbeck's birthday, 10 July, is Finland's national day for the painted arts.

Elin Kleopatra Danielson-Gambogi ( 1861 – 1919) was a Finnish painter, best known for her realist works and portraits. Danielson-Gambogi was part of the first generation of Finnish women artists who received professional education in art, the so-called "painter sisters' generation". The group also included Helene Schjerfbeck(1862–1946).

Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946)  was a Finnish painter. She is most widely known for her realist works and self-portraits, and less well known for her landscapes and still lifes. Throughout her long life, her work changed dramatically.

 Maria Wiik (1853-1928)  was Swedish-speaking upper-class female painter in the era, when women were just becoming professional artists in Finland. She got her early art education in Finland but traveled to study in Paris, initially at the Académie Julian, one of the a private academies which accepted women as students at that time. She painted mostly genre scenes & portraits. Both her portraits & her figurative paintings often focus on youth.

 Venny Soldan-Brofeldt (1863-1945) was a Finnish late 1800s and early 1900s artist and painter. In addition, she was a jewelry designer, making wood and paper sculpturer and illustrated children's books. Soldan-Brofledtin painting topics were close to home, such as children, the marine and coastal scenery. She was also an active feminist. Soldan-Brofeldt was married to writer Juhani Aho with. She died a little less than 82 years of age.

The Dancing Shoes 1882 was sold for nearly GBP 3.05 million, or about EUR 3.9 million at Sotheby’s auction house in London and it is thus the most expensive Finnish painting ever sold in auction

The painting depicts Schjerfbeck’s cousin  Ester Lupander preparing for a dance.

Helene Schjerfbeck is one of the most famous artists in Finland and Scandinavia. She was born 1862 in Helsinki, at the age of four she had an accident and injured her hip.This had serious consequences, which would affect her life and artistry. As a convalescent she spent much time painting and drawing.

At the age of 11, she was accepted to an art school, as her talent was early discovered.

As a young artist she had the opportunity to study and paint in France and England. In the beginning her style was realistic, but as time passed and moving into the 20^th century, Helene developed a very characteristic modern style.
