The Riegelhaus [half-timbered house] has a supporting framework made of timber. In addition to its supporting function, the timber-frame structure also has an ancillary decorative purpose. The gaps were, for the most part, infilled with a clay-wood composite or bricks. Half-timbering was one of the predominant methods of construction from the High Middle Ages up to the 19th century.

Chania Streets

Walking on the streets and alleys of the old town of Chania you can admire the buildings decorated with colorful flowers and plants or relax on a cosy cafe. Many of these buildings are homes, others house shops, stores, bars, cafes and restaurants. Several, mostly Venetian mansions, have been converted into hotels, while other buildings have been converted into museums and venues that host cultural exhibitions.

And of course Grandmas :)
  My favorite city!

Beautiful street view from Saint Paul de Vence
Received from Veronique in Lille, France
Distance: 1,749 km
Travel time: 15 days

Saint-Paul or Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France. One of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera. Saint-Paul de Vence has long been a haven of the famous. During the 1960s, it was frequented by French actors Yves Montand, Simone Signoret and Lino Ventura, and poet Jacques Prévert.

Saint-Paul is also well known for the artists who have lived there, such as Jacques Raverat, Gwen Raverat and Marc Chagall and more recently the couple Bernard-Henri Lévy and Arielle Dombasle. Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman has a home there. American writer James Baldwin died there in 1987. British actor Donald Pleasence died there in 1995.

Another beautiful street view from France.
Received from Gaby & Chris in Alsace
Distance: 1,909 km

Alsace is the region which borders Switzerland to the south and Germany to the east. Alsace has its own distinct identity, language, cuisine, history and architecture – part French, part German, 100% Alsatian. Here you'll find candy-coloured towns and villages with timbered houses with red geraniums, gently rolling countryside, striped with vines,

Magnificent flower street in Alsace, France from Jean-Jacques
He wrote that Alsace is the most beautiful area of his country - I believe him.

Back Street, St. Ives, Cornwall, Great Britain.  Carol lives in St. Ives and she  found this genuine old postcard from an antique shop and it suits perfectly for my " narrow streets with old houses"- collection:)

Russia

Katya sent me three beautiful cards and the first one is showing  a view from  Kosh-Agachsky region in Altai - wide valley surrounded by mountain ranges.

The second shows a beautiful street view in Wooden Irkutsk.  I really admire that great carpenter work - magnificent wooden decorations.

And the third one is from the Golden Ring of Russia, an old church with onion domes

The Golden Ring ( Золото́е кольцо́) is a ring of cities northeast of Moscow. They formerly comprised the region known as Zalesye. These ancient towns, which also played a significant role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church, preserve the memory of the most important and significant events in Russian history. The towns have been called "open air museums" and feature unique monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th–18th centuries, including kremlins, monasteries, cathedrals, and churches. These towns are among the most picturesque in Russia and prominently feature Russia's famous onion domes.

She writes that for a long time it was the only way of communication with the " Big Land" as they called the European part of Russia.

An other bridge across a river came from Liza, she also lives  in Siberia, in the city of Tomsk. There is no information about the river in the card, perhaps it is Ob again or maybe its the tributary Tom, anyway - quite a wide river.

 Wooden Irkutsk
Lovely, old wooden houses with beautiful window decorations, a carpenter's masterpiece.
Thank you Tatyana

Minä olen ilmeisesti perinyt jostakin erikoisen "vanhojentalojen geenin ".  Jo aivan nuorena ihailin vanhoja, punaisia, harmaita ja ränsistyneitäkin puutaloja. Halusin sellaisen itselleni joskus isona  ja sainkin, vanhan, punaisen ja vähän ränsistyneen. Tatyana Moskovasta oli ilmeisesti lukenut profiiliani tarkasti  ( I like narrow streets with old houses :), hän lähetti minulle tämän viehättävän katunäkymän Irkutskista. Ikkunakoristeet talossa  ovat upeat,  irkutskilaisen puusepän taidonnäyte. Suosikkikortti!

The  Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood , St. Petersburg. This marvelous Russian-style church was built on the spot where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in March 1881.
Mariya lähetti kortin Pietarista.  Kortissa on ehkä kuuluisin kaupungin nähtävyys: Verikirkko tai Kristuksen ylösnousemuksen katedraali, joka rakennettiin tsaari Aleksanteri II:n muistoksi paikalle, jolla hänet salamurhattiin vuonna 1881.

"Alphabet" Series

Jester
Boem, (1843-1914) was a talented Russian graphic artist. Born in St. Petersburg, her family moved to Yaroslavl when she was 6 years old. One of her art teachers was Ivan Kramskoi, the influential Russian painter and critic. Her many postcard series were very successful and one of the most well-known is "The Russian Alphabet".

Taas uusi tuttavuus venäläisistä taiteilijoista, ja Elenan lähettämä kortti kyllä piristi marraskuun ensimmäisen päivän harmautta. Toinen suosikkikortti!

Å is for Åbo ( Turku )

The City of Turku was founded in 1229.

Finland's first university was founded in Turku in 1640, even though the number of inhabitants in the city was not very large at that time. The staple town charter (the right to conduct foreign trade) guaranteed, however, that trading was brisk.
In 1827, a large section of Turku was dramatically destroyed in a fire. The burnt city needed an altogether new town plan, which was drawn up by C. L. Engel the following year

Luostarinmäki the Handicrafts Museum.
The area of the museum was the only old residential area left in 1940, when the museum was opened. The location was the largest area to completely survive the Great Fire of Turku. Contemporary handicraft items are presented. The museum received the Golden Apple international tourism award as the only site in Scandinavia in 1984.

The Turku Market Hall, completed in 1896.
The Market Hall, which extends the length of an entire block,
was designed by architect Gustaf Nyström.

Restaurant Samppalinna – a part of the vibrant Turku history since 1832 –
is a spectacular wooden villa with terraces located on the banks of the River Aura.

Turku ( Åbo ) was my home town from 1970 to 1976.
