Rocky landscapes

Calpe (Alicante)

Calpe, often known as Calp, is considered one of the most popular resorts on the Costa Blanca in Spain. The fairly mild winters make the town a popular holiday destination for outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking and climbing, and the warm summers guarantee a perfect beach holiday. Calpe is most famous for the so-called Peñón de Ifach, an imposing rock in the sea that gives the resort its distinctive appearance.

Roque Bentayga, Gran Canaroa, Spain

Roque Bentayga is a rock formation on the island of Gran Canaria. Roque Bentayga is considered an archaeological monument because it contains an "almogarén" (a sanctuary built by the indigenous Guanche people).

Masca, Tenerife, Spain

Masca is a small mountain village on the island of Tenerife. It was originally a Guanche settlement before the Spanish conquest in 1496. The village is now home to around 90 inhabitants. The village lies at an altitude of 650 m in the Macizo de Teno mountains, which extend up to the northwesternmost point of Tenerife.

Pythagoras Cave, Marathokampos, Samos, Greece
My travels

The Cave of Pythagoras is the place where the famous mathematician and philosopher was hiding when the tyrant of Samos, Polycrates, was chasing after him. It is located on the eastern side of Mount Kerkis, the highest mountain of the Aegean, at a distance of 3 km from Votsalakia beach, and its access is quite difficult.

There are actually two caves, one close to the other. It is said that Pythagoras was living in one of them and used the other cave for teaching. One cave is flatter and therefore more appropriate for a living. It has three rooms but you can visit only the two. It ends in two gorgeous steeps and if you walk a bit more, you will meet a spring from where it is believed that Pythagoras used to drink water.

Casa de Colón (Columbus House)

Historic City-Centre of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
UNESCO tentative
Date of Submission: 27/04/2007

The Casa de Colón is one of Las Palmas most attractive buildings with ornate doorways, beautiful latticed balconies, large courtyards and carved wooden ceilings, representing numerous aspects of the island’s architecture. This palace was the residence of the first governors of the island and it is claimed that Christopher Columbus stayed there in 1492 while one of his ships was repaired, hence the name Casa de Colón (Columbus House).

This charming building was rebuilt in 1777 and since 1952 has housed a museum comprising 13 permanent exhibition rooms, a library and study centre as well as several spaces reserved for temporary activities, such as lectures, seminars and exhibitions. On display are pre-Columbian artefacts, ship models, a replica of a cabin of La Niña, one ship of Columbus’ fleet, navigation instruments, nautical maps and charts, paintings as well as many other artefacts related to voyages made by the famous navigator and the history of the Canaries and their relationship with the Americas.

This house was also the birthplace of the celebrated opera tenor, Alfredo Kraus (1927-99). Of more interest to younger visits will be the pair of parrots in the courtyard, especially as they’re particularly talkative.
