 Pedro Berruguete (c. 1450 – 1504)  The Annunciation, c. 1505, Cartuja de Miraflores (Burgos)

Pedro Berruguete was a Spanish painter; his art is regarded as a transitional style in Spain between gothic and Renaissance. Berruguete most famously created paintings of the first few years of the Inquisition and of religious imagery for Castilian retablos. He is considered by some as the first Renaissance painter in Spain.

Saint Petersburg

There are 342 bridges in the city limits of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Peter the Great was designing the city as another Amsterdam and Venice, with canals instead of streets and citizens skillful in sailing.

Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge and veiw of Smolny Convent.

The Bolsheokhinsky Bridge connects the Okhta area to the main part of St. Petersburg. It is well known for its arches and two observation towers. The bridge was first opened in 1911.

A familiar view of Saint Petersburg is a drawbridge across the Neva. Every night during the navigation period from April to November, 22 bridges across Neva and main canals are drawn to let ships pass in and out of the Baltic Sea into the Volga-Baltic waterway system. A calculated schedule with precise time of consecutive opening and closing for each bridge is maintained to guarantee passage of cargo ships and tankers at a precisely controlled speed, in order to have at least one bridge at a time staying connected to ensure passage for firefighters, police, ambulances and other ground transportation

St. Petersburg, Russia, Oranienbaum. The Chinese Palace, 1762-68, A. Rinaldi

There is nothing particularly Chinese about this charming building in the southern corner of the park at Oranienbaum. Built by Antonio Rinaldi between 1762 and 1768, it was the first major building project to be ordered by Catherine the Great, who planned for the building to serve as her private dacha. In fact the Empress spent only 48 days there during the 34 years of her reign. However, the building is considered one of the finest examples of rococo in Russia.

Pietarin nähtävyyksiä - St. Petersburg attractions

Saint Sampson's Cathedral, design by Pietro Antonio Trezzini.
From Nicolai, Kronstadt

Sampsonin katedraali on barokkityyliä edustava kirkkorakennustaiteen muistomerkki Pietarissa.
Nykyään Sampsonin katedraalissa toimii Iisakinkirkon museon haaraosasto.
Kirkon yhteydessä toimi vuoteen 1772 saakka ortodoksinen ja luterilainen hautausmaa, jonne on haudattu mm. kuvanveistäjä Carlo Rastrelli, arkkitehti Domenico Trezzini ja Pietari Suuren henkilökohtainen lääkäri, Lavrentyi  Blumentritt.
It is one of St. Petersburg's oldest surviving churches. The Cathedral's history dates back to 1709, when Peter the Great ordered the construction of a wooden church on this site to honour Russia's decisive victory over the Swedes at the Battle of Poltava, which fell on the feast day of St. Sampson - 27 June. One of the city's first cemeteries was established next to the church, and became the final resting place for some of St. Petersburg's most prominent foreign citizens, including the sculptor Carlo Rastrelli, the architect Domenico Trezzini, and Peter's private physician, Lavrentiy Blumentritt.

Saint Isaac's Cathedral (1818-1858) architect. A. Montferrand
From Dasha, Kstovo

Iisakin kirkko on yksi Pietarin suosituimmista nähtävyyksistä ja on suomalaisille tuttu ainakin sanonnasta "rakennettiin kuin Iisakin kirkkoa", joka viittaa kirkon 40 vuotta kestäneeseen rakennustyöhön 1818-1858. Iisakin kirkko rakennettiin aikanaan Pietarin pääkirkoksi, mikä näkyy kirkon mitoissa: sen korkeus on 101,5 metriä ja sisäpinta-ala yli 4000 neliömetriä.

Neuvostoaikana kirkko muutettiin museoksi. Vuonna 1928 avattiin näyttely, joka kertoi kirkon rakentamisesta. Vuonna 1931 Iisakin kirkossa avattiin Uskonnonvastainen museo. Kirkon kupolista asennettiin riippumaan maailman suurin, yli 90-metrinen Focault'n heiluri, jolla havainnollistetaan maapallon pyörimisliikettä. Vuodesta 1948 katedraalirakennus toimii Iisakin kirkon museona. Tuolloin entisen Uskonnon vastaisen museon näyttelyt siirrettiin Kazanin katedraalissa toimineeseen Uskonnon historian ja ateismin museoon. Vuonna 1990 kirkossa pidettiin pitkän tauon jälkeen ensimmäinen jumalanpalvelus Patriarkka Aleksei II:n johdolla. Vaikka Iisakin kirkko toimii edelleen museona, siellä järjestetään myös juhlajumalanpalveluksia erityisen merkittävinä päivinä.

Saint Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg  is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city. It is the largest orthodox basilica and the fourth largest cathedral in the world. It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great, who had been born on the feast day of that saint.

 The Peter and Paul Fortress
From Dina, St. Petersburg

Pietari-Paavalin Linnoituksen suunnitteli sveitsiläissyntyinen arkkitehti  Domenico Trezzini vuonna 1703. Linnoituksessa on muutama rakennus, kuten Pietari-Paavalin Tuomiokirkko, johon kaikki tsaarit on haudattu Pietari I:stä lähtien. Viimeinen tsaariperhe haudattiin kirkkoon vuonna 1998. Vuoden 2006 lopussa leskikeisarin Maria Fedorovnan ruumis kuljetettiin Tanskasta ja haudattiin Pietari-Paavalin linnoitukseen, miehensä Aleksanteri III:n viereen. Suuri keisarien mausoleumi on yhdistetty kirkkoon käytävällä.

Pietari-Paavalin Katedraali rakennettiin vuosina 1712-1733.

The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini's designs from 1706-1740.  In the early 20th century, it was still used as a prison by the tsarist government. In the middle of the fortress stands the impressive Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of all the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great to Alexander III. The Cathedral was the first church in the city to be built of stone (between 1712-33) and its design is  unusual for a Russian Orthodox church.

Boem, (1843-1914) was a talented Russian graphic artist. Born in St. Petersburg, her family moved to Yaroslavl when she was 6 years old.
