St Michael's Church, Turku

Michael's Church (Finnish: Mikaelinkirkko, Swedish: Mikaels kyrkan) is a church situated in central Turku. It is named after Archangel Michael and was finished in 1905.  The church is one of the most popular wedding churches in Turku being able to seat 1,800 people.

The Maiden of Finland is the national personification of Finland. She is a barefoot young woman in her mid-twenties with often braided blonde hair, blue eyes, wearing a blue and white national costume or a white dress. She was originally called Aura after the Aura River in Turku.

In the painting "The Attack" by Edvard Isto, the Finnish Maiden is being attacked by the Russian eagle, which is tearing away the law book from her hands. It was painted when the Russification of Finland started in 1899.

The church’s architectural example was the Roman temple of Pantheon. The church was completed in 1798. The architect was Louis Jean Deprez, court painter to King Gustav III. The altar painting depicts the Saviour’s appearance to Mary Magdalene.
